voy y band

,

Following an invitation from AC/E for the Spanish Pavilion in Osaka, we created VOY Y BAND. The work is a hybrid of formats and a collage of dances and songs. With the idea of braiding notions of Spanish, Japanese, and global pop culture, three performers engage in different modes of embodying an attitude—a way of relating that oscillates between emotionality, dedication, and silliness.

VOY Y BAND is a play on words. On one hand, it evokes the universe of the boy band: a way of understanding how masculinity is performed and how one becomes an object of desire. On the other hand, it sounds like “Voy y van” (I go and they go), suggesting a back-and-forth, a mode of correspondence, of taking from each other and transforming. These two ideas meet in an event that responds directly to its audience, gradually creating a sort of phenomenon. What kind of phenomenon that is, however, depends entirely on the audience and the type of event we end up creating together.

The piece adapts to different formats and materials, ensuring it changes every time. In that sense, we have already used more than seven different outfits and performed different songs at each staging. Therefore, it remains as a living work.
